I joined Capco on the Associate Talent Program as a career-changer. I had completed a five-year degree in International Business and Modern Languages at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, which also involved an Erasmus year studying in Spain. I’ve always loved a challenge - from competing in the Scottish nationals at swimming to playing hockey at university and in the London leagues. However, I’d had a challenging final year at university, which included re-adjusting to the Scottish climate after my time abroad, suffering a bout of swine flu and being diagnosed with dyslexia. I was keen to dive into a new type of challenge.

I subsequently found myself in a role in London working in sales. The job had its benefits, such as company cars, incentive holidays, bonuses, and a work-hard-play-hard mentality. It was perfect for a recent graduate, and I was good at it; however, five years later, I felt that I was not on a career path that I was genuinely passionate about. Having worked with some leading financial institutions in my sales role, I was interested in having an impact on how these organizations work. Various friends were management consultants at the time, so I understood what consulting was, and financial services consulting seemed like the perfect fit.

Cultural fit was a key attribute when I was looking for a new role, and Capco just stood out from the crowd. My research indicated this was a company that was innovative, dynamic, fun, people-oriented, interesting, and importantly, offered a challenge. This was evident when visiting Capco for my interviews and all the great people I met during the process. I was sold.

Fast forward four years, and I still love the job, and each day brings a new challenge. I’ve worked on various client projects over the years, from tier one investment banks to challenger banks to payment technology providers. I’ve learned a lot by working across target operating model design and implementation, strategy definition and implementation, regulatory compliance, and proposition design.

I’ve so far secured three promotions during my time here and am currently working towards the next one, which would not have been possible if I joined one of the Big Four firms with their more rigid career progression opportunities.

One of the best things about working for Capco is the people you work with, from my fellow ATPers – some of whom I go on holidays with – to my coaches over the years and the UK Partner team, who are down-to-earth and approachable - they really care about people.

I am incredibly grateful for everyone who has invested time in my personal and professional development throughout my Capco journey. For this reason, I’m keen to give back to the protégées I now coach. I hope they will follow in my footsteps as they progress their careers within the company.
