Emerging market economies will generate the bulk of the growth in future global greenhouse gas emissions, and their actions on climate risk may determine if the global 2050 net zero target can be met. APAC financial institutions, as the pipelines of capital to the fast-growing emerging markets in the APAC region, are preparing to play a particularly important role.

However, APAC financial institutions face huge challenges in understanding today’s climate change landscape across the diverse APAC region, settling on the right strategies and methodologies to support net-zero, and accessing the data they need to assess the ESG credentials of companies, stocks and whole portfolios.

With best practices far from harmonized across APAC markets and institutions, this paper takes a problem-solving approach to key questions:

• How ready are APAC emerging markets for the net zero transition?
• How can financial institutions establish net-zero strategies for decarbonizing portfolios?
• What are the implications for establishing robust ESG data strategies and the technologies that support them?
