Coaching – A Journey of Transformation

Sumeet Pai

To mark International Coaching Week, a number of Capco colleagues shared their reflections on coaching including the benefits and the important role that coaching plays at Capco.

Last year, I presented a session titled, “Leadership at Every Level” to Capco India colleagues, highlighting that leadership isn’t tied to a title. It’s about leading by example and driving positive change, no matter your role.

Leadership is a continuous journey, and to evolve and grow, we all need guidance. That’s where coaching comes in. Coaching, both a mindset and a method, helps unlock potential and empower individuals to become their best selves.

Over the past four years at Capco, I’ve had the privilege of being both a Coach and being coached.  Our use of the GROW (Goal, Reality, Options and Will) and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) models provides a structured, thoughtful approach to coaching that supports personal and professional development.

My own coaching journey began after completing the ACC accreditation as a Life Coach (currently pursuing my PCC accreditation) and, I find many similarities in the impact that coaching can have on a personal and a professional level, emphasizing core values such as trust, empathy and respect. Being open to feedback and flexible in approach has been key to making the most of these experiences, and I have always embraced them with humbleness.

I have also drawn inspiration from role models in society, considering them as my coaches although I haven’t met or interacted with them. For example, the former Indian President, Dr Abdul Kalam, who I have always looked up to for his leadership style and his immense contribution to society. Reflecting on Dr Kalam always reminds me that there are many rivers to cross, so we must keep learning, growing and giving back.

While I feel happy that I have made a small contribution through coaching by helping individuals to identify their growth potential; I am equally thankful to the many coaches who have helped me become a better version of myself. This journey for me will continue.

As we celebrate the end of Coaching Week at Capco, I would like to encourage everyone to adopt coaching as an essential part of your professional journey to explore avenues for growth, reach your true potential, and to make a positive impact in society.
