OUR STORIES

RETURNING TO WORK AFTER MATERNITY LEAVE

After any extended leave of absence, it can be hard to come back to work. When my maternity leave was coming to an end, I couldn’t wait to have regular “adult” conversations and challenge my brain with something other than remembering the words to “hop little bunny” on limited sleep. However, I was anxious about leaving my son at nursery and worried about how I would manage being a working parent. I wasn’t sure how people would react if I needed to leave early to collect him or take days off at short notice when he’s sick.

I needn’t have worried. Capco’s culture means that I felt supported returning to work, and I don’t feel like I’m choosing between my career and my family. During my first weeks back, I was eased slowly into working life with the understanding that my husband, my son and I were still getting used to our new routines. I also had my coach to lean on, who is forever caring and available to give advice on how to navigate this new world of responsibilities. No one has ever batted an eye lid on the days where I have needed to leave early to collect him; why would they when half the team have similar commitments, we’re all human. My pandemic baby has an inevitably immature immune system and has already caught more nursery bugs than I can count. Whilst my husband has shared this responsibility, there have been times my son has joined Zoom calls because when he’s ill he wants his mum. Rather than this causing problems, he’s been welcomed.

I’m still learning what it means to be a parent. As my career evolves and my son grows, I’m sure new challenges will appear. I look forward with the confidence that Capco will provide a supportive environment for me to carry out both my role as a mother and a consultant to the best of my ability.
