Capco has developed a long-term partnership with Room to Read, a non-profit organization focused on improving literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world. This is a cause that was selected by the Capco team, and it is supported through our employee-led CSR program.
Since 2013, Capco has raised funds to build a school in the Puttalam region of Sri Lanka, built 3 libraries in India, and has continued fundraising efforts aiming to contribute to the sustainability schools and promotion of education in the developing world.
When Capco first started its collaboration with Room to Read, the immediate goal was to support the construction of a new school in the remote region of Puttalam, Sri Lanka. At that time, classes in the region were being conducted in a poor learning environment in temporary buildings, some of which lacked the external walls causing class cancellation when there was inclement weather. To top it off, new admissions to the school were due to increase in 2014 because of a new government program.
Faced with those challenges, Capco and its employees raised funds in a number of ways by hosting and participating in art and music evenings, a club night, marathons, a 24-hour global treadmill challenge, bake sales, and a Christmas market event to name just a few. Through these fundraising events, Capco supported Room to Read in building a spacious new school with good light and ventilation, and most importantly, created a positive learning environment for the children. In addition, new desks and chairs were supplied for teachers and students. The new building was welcomed by the community and continues to have a positive impact on the education of children in the area today. Through continued fundraising efforts Capco has helped to ensure that the work Room to Read carries out in the developing world is sustainable and that schools like the one in Puttalam can continue to prosper.
Since the development of the school, Capco has further supported Room to Read with the building of 3 libraries in India, with funds being raised globally through silent auctions, bake sales and other fun events! Furthermore, our consultants are now undertaking pro-bono internal projects for Room to Read to address operational and technology challenges.
