My name is Janee Jenkins, and I graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. After receiving my degree, I knew that I wanted to build on my education by exploring the many other interests I developed throughout my undergraduate career. Much of my extracurricular activities during my matriculation was focused on networking and building relationships and a community with other like-minded people across various industries, and I was able to continue that upon moving to Chicago post graduation.

My first year out of college played a significant role in shaping and fine-tuning my hard and soft skills for life in the corporate world. I started working for an educational non-profit, where I had many stretch projects that expanded my thinking and connected me with so many talented individuals from different organizations. My peers and colleagues were willing to support me on my journey and give feedback on how I could make this great experience even better.

Transitioning from a non-profit to Capco was a little challenging at first, with everything I had (or hadn’t yet) learned  was now going to be put into play. While it wasn’t the first time that I’d been exposed to a fast-paced business environment, it was my first introduction to the world of finance. Working alongside professionals and subject matter experts who were much more familiar with the intricacies of the industry was daunting to me at the time and pushed me into a ‘worker bee’ mindset.

It wasn’t until I had an open conversation with a mentor that I began doing my own research on unfamiliar or challenging topics and asking a mountain of questions to deepen my understanding. Having recognized that it was up to me to take control of my career, I began to think and act strategically about all the moving parts within my projects and noticed my teams were starting to better appreciate my true value.

My experience at Capco to date as a consultant has truly been a journey. I am currently working as a Business Analyst on one of Capco’s GenAI projects, and it’s been amazing to learn and create at the same time.

My advice is to be intentional about asking for help and remain authentic. Asking the right questions is crucial to showing your initiative to understand your work on a deeper level and is the best thing you can do to show you’re engaged as a consultant. At the same time, don’t shy away from attempting to solve problems on your own first. If you find yourself uncertain, it’s most likely because you need proper clarity, and you can only get that if you ask for it – sometimes that can be the make or break for you when it comes to making meaningful impact within your team.

As I celebrate my two-year anniversary at Capco, I’m excited for the months ahead on my project as I continue to learn, adapt and connect with my team and beyond to expand my network.
