Celebrating Capco Women in Data with Emma Cudal

Q: How did you get into data, and what’s your background?

Emma: My name is Emma Cudal, and I am a Managing Principal in the Data Strategy & Advisory capability at Capco. My expertise lies in data management, data governance, and complex project delivery. My career didn’t start in the data and tech industry, and it wasn’t necessarily the path I expected to follow - data just happened to me. I began in middle office operations within global investment banking and transitioned into business consulting for the variety of projects across top-tier clients. After my first year in consulting, I was assigned to a data management project and never looked back, redefining myself as a female leader in data management strategy and advisory.

Q: What made you apply for a role in the Data & Analytics practice at Capco?

Emma: In my previous industry role, I worked on system automation and STP projects, developing my skills in business analysis and project management. Through my work with Capco as a client, I became familiar with the firm and the world of consulting. The opportunity to work across a range of clients and projects, combined with Capco’s unique culture of meritocracy and people development, motivated me to join. Initially hired as a consultant, I soon became involved in a global data management office project and found my passion in Data Strategy & Advisory.

Q: What has been the most interesting data project you’ve been involved in?

Emma: Over the past ten years, I have worked with global clients on transformations in data management, including data lineage, control frameworks, data quality remediation, regulatory compliance, and target operating models. The most interesting project was establishing a global Data Management Office to ensure compliance with BCBS239 and similar regulations. We developed a data management strategy, implemented a global team, and successfully transitioned operations to a BAU function.

Q: What challenges have you faced starting a career in data?

Emma: Coming from a non-data background, I faced challenges in developing my expertise while on the job. Imposter syndrome was a significant hurdle, as was navigating an industry with few senior female role models at the time. While progress is being made, there is still work to do in ensuring greater diversity and representation.

Q: What key traits make someone successful in the Capco Data & Analytics team?

Emma:

  • Willingness to learn: The data landscape is constantly evolving, and being open to continuous learning is essential
  • Adaptability and flexibility: Client needs and priorities shift, requiring consultants to pivot and adjust quickly
  • Communication: Being able to translate technical data concepts into meaningful insights for non-technical stakeholders is a critical skill.

Q: What does #BYAW (Be Yourself at Work) mean to you?

Emma: BYAW has given me the confidence and flexibility to grow my career without fear of judgment or bias. As a woman in a male-dominated field, it’s crucial to advocate for yourself and know that your voice matters. Through my role as the Data DEI Lead and our Women in Data partnership, I strive to empower others. As a new mother, BYAW has also given me the confidence to balance work and family life, effectively.

Q: What advice would you give to women hoping to start a career in data?

Emma: Don’t feel confined by your previous studies or job roles. Your unique experiences bring valuable perspectives to the data field. The industry offers ample learning opportunities, and there are many supportive people willing to mentor and guide you.

Q: What are your future goals and aspirations in the data field?

Emma: I want to continue advocating for women in data and drive conversations around diversity and inclusion. Creating a strong community for knowledge-sharing and mentorship is a priority. It would be incredible to see more women in senior leadership roles within data and tech. Being recognized as a Tech100 Women winner in 2023 was an honor, and I hope to continue making a meaningful impact in this space.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of data?

Emma: I love cooking, experimenting with new recipes and traveling. Since returning to work, I cherish spending time with my family and my 17-month-old daughter, embracing more child-friendly activities!

Q: Are there any resources that have been game-changers for you?

Emma: Leveraging opportunities through Capco and the Women in Data partnership has been instrumental in my career growth. Attending conferences, speaking on panels, participating in networking events, and listening to industry podcasts have broadened my perspective and fueled my passion for data.
