SANDS, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity, was founded in 1978 by a small group of bereaved parents devastated by the death of their babies, and by the total lack of acknowledgement and understanding of the significance and impact of their loss. The charity supports anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth, as well as funding research, prevention and awareness. They offer emotional support and information for parents, grandparents, siblings, children, families and friends, health professionals and others.

Where does Capco come in?

Unfortunately more often than not, non-profit organizations don’t have all the necessary resources to be able to be run effectively, and that is where Capco can help.

Capco is helping SANDS by creating an app that contains all the information that currently is spread across 13 different bereavement leaflets and website pages. The app will enable parents and family members to access up-to-date information quicker and more easily at the time of their baby’s death.

Whilst the app will not replace existing bereavement care given by medical professionals, it will aid in the grieving journey by giving parents access to relevant information in a timely manner when they are ready, and also aid medical professionals so that all information accessed by parents is not out of date.

Here are some facts that caught the attention of Capco, driving us to get involved:

  • 1 in 200 babies are stillborn in the UK each year
  • More than 3,600 adults are affected by stillbirth every year
  • 85% of those adults own a smartphone
  • 13 help and support leaflets going mobile thanks to ICL
