‘Their Corporate Responsibility programme provides support and coaching for school children, and gives them an opportunity to learn about things that aren’t on the school timetable’

Wiesbaden: The Frankfurt operations of the global consulting firm Capco has been formally selected by the State of Hessen as employer of the month for September, 2012. ‘As a part of their local corporate responsibility efforts and initiatives, members of the Frankfurt office have been working closely with school children, sharing their technical expertise and know-how on IT topics that don’t form a part of the normal school curriculum.,’ commented State Secretary Michael Busser, spokesperson for the State of Hessen.

The Capco team has been working closely with the Reinhardshof School in Frankfurt, which provides schooling for special needs children who are not able to participate in the regular state schooling system. The smaller class sizes – ranging from two to nine pupils – provide an opportunity for greater one on one teaching and coaching, and allowed Capco to provide practical training and advice in the classroom. The basis of this element of Capco’s corporate responsibility programme was for a select number of employees to give up some of their free time to share their industry expertise and experience with the school’s pupils. In return, the Capco participants in the programme are rewarded with the experience of working and sharing their knowledge with a close-knit group of school children.

The programme has been up and running since May 2011, when the consultant helped the school build its own website, along with a content management system. Capco provided financial support for an outward bound activity that gave the school children the chance to go sailing in September 2011. In November last year, the school children got the chance to attend training sessions at Capco’s offices in the Frankfurt financial district, getting a chance to get out of the classroom and into the workplace. In April this year, the team went back to the classroom and donated a number of laptops with the pupils, providing them further tuition in use of a computer. The sessions will continue every quarter, with the next session for autumn already scheduled.

More information on the employers who receive the award can be found at: www.engagiertes-unternehmen.de. At Capco’s request, the financial element of the award – 500 Euros – was donated to the school to support further learning activities. Secretary of State for Hessen Busser confirmed that the cash award was intended as a symbolic gesture of thanks to each employer.
