IS ENGINEERING NEXT YEAR'S SECRET WEAPON?

IS ENGINEERING NEXT YEAR'S SECRET WEAPON?

2020 saw an unprecedented demand for digital services, as billions of us adjusted our work and home lives. The load this placed on ageing technology stacks, and the people and processes behind them, was enormous.

However, the reality is this hasn’t fundamentally changed the destination, just increased the urgency on getting there. Engineering excellence has moved from a supporting competency to a core competency for financial services, and one that needs to be significantly improved. Where users measure their digital experience against the very best from Spotify, Amazon, and Google, how do you keep up?

Over the next few days, we’re going to share some things we think are powerful if controlled, and dangerous if ignored, but first we wanted to tell you a little about us.

HELLO WORLD_

We are Capco Engineering.

We’re not new, we’ve just been working away, bringing a forward- looking yet pragmatic view of technology to Capco clients. Then building/integrating/deploying battle-ready services, pulling from the best examples of engineering excellence. We’ve done this for some of the largest financial services firms all around the globe. Firms that needed a different approach to get to grips with accelerating complexity, without missing a step in their complex change agenda.

We’ve spent years addressing the root causes of technology challenges in ‘failure is not an option’ businesses. Now we’re going to tell you about what we have learned, and how high-quality engineering is your secret weapon in 2021 and beyond.

Why? Because this matters to us. When we go to work, we know our clients are trusting us to do more than just code; they trust us to build sustainable platforms for the future. We respect this because as engineers we’ve been through the triumph and despair of having to keep aging tech stacks alive. To us this is personal.

ENGINEERING FORCES – CHALLENGE OR OPPORTUNITY

We help financial services firms accelerate change by exploiting these opportunities.

PILLARS OF CAPCO ENGINEERING

Taking the design of technology services and putting them in the hands of real end-users. Providing high quality technology services across the entire stack to design, develop and deploy performant, secure and scalable solutions.

01: MOBILE AND WEB DEVELOPMENT

Delivering high quality end-user experiences by building and deploying into the app store and providing cross channel experience with web applications

  • Application architecture assessment
  • Mobile & web application development
  • Mobile app quality specific solutions

02: API DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

In a connected world clients need to provide their services to consumers and consume the services of others to innovate and get to market faster.

  • API design and development
  • API integration of third party services
  • API gateway and developer experience (DX)

03: DEVOPS AND DEVSECOPS

Applying proven DevOps principles and practices at scale to significantly increase the speed, quality (incl. security) and sustainability of delivering technology services to production.

  • DevOps maturity assessment
  • DevOps pipeline implementation
  • DevOps coaching

04: CLOUD SERVICES

Combining consultancy and technology expertise to accelerate clients’ journeys to the cloud while meeting the requirements of complex and regulated environments.

  • Cloud strategy
  • Cloud operating model
  • Cloud migration delivery

05: CLOUD NATIVE EVELOPMENT

Designing and building new cloud native solutions on top of relentless cloud innovations (e.g. containers, serverless, service meshes etc).

  • Domain driven design
  • Building microservices development
  • Platform modernization and engineering

06: QUALITY ENGINEERING

Unreliable services lose users quickly. Primarily through automated testing, we assure quality across both functional and non-functional (e.g. accessibility, security) requirements.

  • Automation framework implementation
  • API contact testing & verification
  • Non-functional testing

We sit in a unique sweet spot combining engineering and world-class consulting, and we’re rooted in financial services: it’s all we do. We’re big enough to do genuinely impactful work, but not so huge that we can rest on our laurels.

“Impactful and sustainable technology delivery that delivers outcomes is difficult in any context. Add in the multipliers of scale, legacy and complexity in a highly regulated industry and the challenges are exponential.

“You need a step change in mindset, approach and technical competency. The challenge of this can’t be underestimated and to be successful you need highly motivated, deeply technical problem solvers, who can bring engineering thinking, to continuously improve the technology stacks that power financial services today.”
- Jonathan Fenwick, Managing Principal, Head of Digital Engineering, UK at Capco.

So what's next?

2020 was the tipping point for people using digital technology to manage their lives. With their expectations of digital delivery sky-high, the risk of doing nothing more than tending technical debt and legacy is rockier than ever.

Over the next few days, we’ll bring you useful snippets of our perspective, to help shape your 2021 thinking. Then into next year we’ll elaborate on this, with deeper answers to the most pressing questions you have.

2021 is the year to build for the future. Join us as we Re-engineer 2021.
